Mica discs made from muscovite or phlogopite are used to protect sight glass plates – especially borosilicate – under strong chemical or thermal stress. Muscovite mica has a continuous heat resistance of up to 500 °C, phlogopite up to 700 °C. Both materials extend the service life of sight glasses and are especially suitable for extreme conditions, being resistant to radiation, organic solvents, and many acids.
FEP (perfluoroethylenepropylene) protective screens are used to shield sight glass plates from aggressive chemical influences. They are particularly suitable for media with high pH levels and offer excellent visibility of the process medium thanks to their transparency. FEP has similar properties to PTFE but is more translucent and allows safe operation at temperatures up to 200 °C. The thickness of the FEP screen is adapted to the application to ensure optimal protection and visual clarity.
