Good engineering practice -
What does it mean?

The good engineering practice according to the Pressure equipment directive (PED) ensures that pressure equipment can be designed, manufactured, and used safely. Manufacturers are responsible for complying with this practice, which is documented through sufficient user instructions and labeling. Furthermore, it is advisable to include a note regarding the fulfillment of the requirements in the operating manual or as a separate document.

Good engineering practice in pressure equipment manufacturing

“Good engineering practice” according to Article 4, Paragraph 3 of the Pressure Equipment Directive means that the pressure equipment has been designed taking into account all relevant factors that affect its safety.

Furthermore, the device is manufactured, inspected, and delivered with operating instructions in such a way that, when used under foreseeable or reasonably foreseeable conditions, its safety is ensured throughout its intended service life.

The manufacturer is responsible for compliance with good engineering practice.

What information should be provided when placing pressure equipment or assemblies of several pressure devices that are connected by a manufacturer to a coherent functional unit, which fall under Article 4, Paragraph 3 (good engineering practice), to indicate that they comply with the provisions of Article 4, Paragraph 3?

There are no specific provisions in the directive regarding how the manufacturer must indicate that these devices comply with the Pressure equipment directive.

However, the manufacturer must include sufficient user instructions and provide labeling that allows for the identification of the manufacturer or their authorized representative established in the community.

Manufacturers should be aware that it is likely helpful if they attach a reference to the Pressure equipment directive to the product, stating that the requirements of the good engineering practice applicable in a member state are met.

This can for example be achieved through a statement included in the operating instructions or through a separate document attached to the device or by an addition to the labeling.
