Product information

The Type 317 round vessel sight glass is designed for the safe visual inspection of processes in non-pressurised vessels, boilers, tanks and silos.

The sight glass assembly for non-pressurised vessels consists of round flanged sockets for welding in or onto the vessel and allows the interior of the vessel to be observed; it can also be fitted with lighting on request.

Unlike pressure-retaining versions, Type 317 is designed purely as a viewing port. This makes the fitting significantly lighter and flatter than comparable vessel sight glasses for pressure applications.

The round sight glass fitting PN 0 is available in nominal diameters DN 50 to DN 400 and is intended for non-pressurised applications up to a maximum of 0.49 barg.

Materials

The Type 317 vessel sight glass is manufactured as standard from high-quality, corrosion-resistant 1.4571 stainless steel. This ensures that even this lightweight version is made from a material that has proven itself in industrial practice for many years.

Borosilicate glass in accordance with DIN 7080 is used as the standard glass material. Customised versions of the vessel sight glass, such as sapphire glass and quartz glass, are also available on request.

Flat gaskets made from various materials are available for sealing the vessel sight glass. Depending on the medium, temperature and operating conditions, classic fibre gaskets as well as PTFE (Teflon®), NBR, novaphit® MST-XP, KlingerSil® C4400 and other branded gaskets can be used.

For applications involving elevated temperatures and steam, mica protective screens are available to provide additional protection for the sight glass. For aggressive chemicals or alkalis, FEP or Halar® coatings can also be applied.

Applications

Typical applications for the round, non-pressurised vessel sight glass include the chemical and water industries, biogas plants, and storage and process vessels where media or process conditions need to be reliably monitored.

Thanks to its lightweight and flat design, the Type 317 is particularly suitable for applications where a cost-effective solution for a sight port is required without the need for a pressure-retaining construction.

Options

The Type 317 vessel sight glass can be supplied with various accessories and in a range of special designs. Options include wipers, spray systems and LED lights for both hazardous and non-hazardous areas. Additionally, mica protective screens and additional coatings such as FEP or Halar® are available.

For specific requirements regarding materials, gaskets, dimensions or process conditions, customised special designs, such as double glazing or heating cartridges, can be provided. Please do not hesitate to contact us regarding this.

FAQs

Type 317 is designed purely as a sight port and not as a pressure-retaining fitting. It is therefore intended for non-pressurised applications up to a maximum of 0.49 bar gauge. The vessel sight glass is thus ideally suited as a cost-effective sight port for vessels, tanks and silos.

Yes. The Type 317 round non-pressurised vessel sight glass is designed for welding in or onto the vessel and is manufactured in accordance with DIN 28120.

Depending on the design, different temperature ranges are possible: up to 280 °C with borosilicate glass to DIN 7080, up to 300 °C with an additional glow protection disc, and up to 400 °C with unhardened borosilicate glass, quartz or sapphire glass.

Type 317 is available in the nominal diameters DN 50, DN 80, DN 100, DN 125, DN 150, DN 200, DN 300 and DN 400.

FEP or Halar® coatings are particularly recommended when the sight glass requires additional protection against aggressive chemicals or alkalis.
