High-pressure flow sight glass type 522 as a special design

Customer requirements

The requirements for the sight glass were clearly defined:

  • Working pressure: 120 bar(g)
  • Working temperature: Max +60 °C
  • Process connection: G ½“ Whitworth pipe thread according to DIN EN ISO 228-1
  • Special feature: As small a distance as possible between the process medium and the sight glass plate to allow for precise monitoring by a camera system.

As part of a demanding project, ACI Industriearmaturen GmbH was once again able to demonstrate its expertise. A customer from a renowned corporate group in the field of joining technology commissioned us to develop a high-pressure Flow sight glass for an innovative process application.


The goal was to visually monitor a novel protective coating for battery covers under high-pressure conditions.

Technical Solution: Adaptation of the Standard Type 522

As a basis for the project, we chose our proven high-pressure Flow sight glass of Type 522, which is designed as standard for working pressures up to 320 bar(g). However, to meet the specific requirements of the customer, customized adaptations were necessary.

Structural changes:

A key aspect was to bring the flowing medium as close as possible to the sight glass panel. With the help of a specially developed observation wedge, the distance of the medium to the sight glass panel could be reduced to just 3 mm. This modification ensures precise process observation but is limited to a one-sided view.

Materials and Components

For the sight glass pane, we chose borosilicate glass, which was manufactured according to DIN 7080. This glass offers outstanding optical properties and high chemical and thermal resistance, ideal for demanding applications like this.

Gasket system

The media-side sealing was accomplished with a novaphit® MST-XP gasket. This material combines excellent anti-adhesive properties with high temperature and pressure resistance. A crucial advantage of the XP technology is the reduction of deposits on the sealing surfaces, which facilitates later replacement and minimizes maintenance costs.

Result

The special design of type 522 met all the customer's requirements. By precisely adjusting existing products, a customized solution was created that withstands the demanding process conditions and enables reliable process monitoring.
