How are pipelines marked?
Pipelines are color-coded and labeled to indicate their contents and pressure levels. These marking systems enhance safety and facilitate maintenance, especially in complex systems.
Markings of Pipelines
For safety reasons, a clear marking of the medium on the pipelines is essential. The marking of pipelines serves, for example, effective fire extinguishing and is also helpful during maintenance work. This way, the flowing working medium can be quickly identified. Emergency services can also immediately prepare for and respond to hazards during firefighting operations.
- The marking must be durable and clearly visible.
- Markings can be applied through painting, bands, signs, or inscriptions.
- Markings should be placed at hazardous points and operationally important areas (e.g., at junctions, at the beginning and end, at wall penetrations and fittings).
- After a pipe length of max. 10 m, the marking must be repeated.
- The marking must include the group, additional color, flow direction, and the designation of the medium. The medium should be named or indicated with the chemical formula.
- Hazardous substances must additionally be marked with the appropriate hazard pictograms.
